Criminal law is a side of my firm that I don’t think I’m ever going to get rid of. I think I need to practice criminal law for the rest of my career. And the reason for that is, people come to me at the most vulnerable stage of their life, when the state of Texas accuses them of a crime.

The way that the system is set up in this country is that we have protections under the Constitution, particularly the Fourth Amendment, where I see most of my work is in preventing unreasonable searches and seizures. It’s an easy way to get evidence suppressed, and generally, the feeling here is that a lot of people are arrested for maybe possessing illegal contraband, but the process is what matters, the process, and the protections, and the rights that we’re given in this country.

That’s what’s important, and that’s why I practice criminal law.
